The
problem with so much power pop is its tendency to be British Invasion
redux. Parthenon Huxley, lead singer/guitarist and songwriter of P.
Hux, has never beat his meatle trying to redo Beatles For Sale.
What he has learned at the altar of Lennon and Macca is the potency
of the almighty melody, which he's mastered like few others.
Huxley has taken the holy hook and married it to thrashier guitars and
drums and complex vocal harmonies. And what a lyricist: "We drink too
much and drive too fast/We scar our skin so something lasts" from "Keep
From Crying" on P. Hux's album Deluxe. Between P. Hux, his other band
VeG, his production work with E (now of eels), Kyle Vincent and others,
he's the most underrated pop genius without a major-label deal.
